Pen, Paper, Porcelain: Embodied Mythopoetics
Led by Mark Lumpkin
“Mythopoetics” is a resonant term referring to the making of a mythology. Poiesis is the Greek word for making or shaping something into a coherent, and therefore, shared form. Every person forms their own personal mythology, or story, via experiences throughout their life. How does one’s personal myth embody through one’s artwork?
All artists tell a story with their work ~ it’s a creative process formed in the depths of psyche and soma. Understanding one’s “Personal Myth / Mythology” brings forth a deeper understanding of the creative fire and the meaning of one’s “story.” Owning, writing and controlling one’s story gives power and freedom to the foundations of creative expression.
We will review the classical mythology of Thoth the Egyptian God of the Moon, of reckoning, learning, and writing. This mythological perspective will help give unique insight into each artist’s journey and their personal mythology including their multifaceted creative spark.
“Mythopoetics” is then a shaping of a new myth, or it can suggest a remaking of an old myth, to instill greater life, vitality or a deeper sense of justice and fair play. Bringing awareness to each other’s mythopoetics and stories shines a new light on how, when, where and why our personal mythology was created.
