Look Closer: Watercolor Cloudscapes & Botanicals
Led by Jean Cate
Join Chicago-based artist Jean Cate for “Look Closer” a cloudscape and botanical watercolor workshop. Dive into the world of watercolors as Jean guides you through an exploration of local botanicals, natural ephemera, and skyscapes. Inspired by Georgia O’Keeffe’s philosophy of “looking closely”, we will study our subjects closely before creating our portraits.
During this weekend watercolor workshop, we will explore natural foliage, examine watercolor styles and techniques, discuss color theory, paint swatch, study composition, practice presence and intuitive painting, paint landscapes and cloudscapes, and create both structured and loose portraits. Jean will guide you through painting demonstrations with hands-on assistance in group settings, while also making time for solo painting. We will alternate between painting in the studio and outdoors.
Prior art experience is not necessary, anyone is welcome to join the class. This weekend course is a mix of skill-building, inspiration, creative exploration, and a supportive, educational atmosphere.

About the Leader
Jean Cate
Jean Cate (b. 1990 in Pasadena, CA) is an artist, living and working in Chicago. She received her BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago with focuses in painting, drawing, and ceramics. Cate also studied papermaking, philosophy, and performance at Ox-Bow School of Art & Artists’ Residency in Saugatuck, MI.
Cate creates evocative paintings and drawings exploring the theme of atmosphere. Her works draw inspiration from the ever-changing and dramatic forces of nature. Utilizing watercolor, pastel, ink, and salt on raw birch wood panel, Cate engages with these mediums in a dance-like manner, relinquishing the illusion of control and allowing natural forces like water, air, and gravity to shape the artwork. When not working in abstract form, Cate draws quiet, still portraits of flora and fauna.
Cate is the owner of Martha Mae Art Supplies & Beautiful Things and The Center of Order and Experimentation.
