Program

Contemplate the Cosmos

Led by Wayne Hicks

PLEASE NOTE: This is not an astronomy course per se.
Contemplate the Cosmos under the dark skies and secluded landscapes of the painted desert of Ghost Ranch, New Mexico. Stay in Casa Del Sol, a private facility reserved exclusively for course participants and located near the iconic Puerto de Cielo (“Gateway to Heaven”) formation—the perfect setting for an immersive night sky observation and contemplation experience.

In order for us to be able to look deeper into the cosmos, telescopes will be available for viewing as we embrace some of life’s deeper questions and concerns. While important questions may not be answered
during this exploration, an opportunity will be provided for them to be considered in a different way. By observing the vast stellar universe, we may gain new insight into our fundamental nature and purpose. There may also be an opportunity to discover new and different perspectives on some of humanity’s spiritual traditions and philosophical ideas.

Basic contemplation will be explored and encouraged alongside celestial and terrestrial observations creating space for a possible shift in perspective. Importantly, there will be no teaching of, nor emphasis on, any particular religion, philosophy or practice. Participants are encouraged to attend with curiosity as well as an open heart and mind.

Please keep in mind that ideal weather and observing conditions are never guaranteed. Additional details will be provided to participants when class registration is completed.

About the Leader
Wayne Hicks
Wayne Hicks
Wayne Hick’s interest in the skies began upon seeing the rings of Saturn as a teenager, and he became an amateur astronomer thereafter. He first experienced the wondrous night skies of Ghost Ranch in 1982, as a participant in the course “Exploring the Cosmos.” Following that experience he accepted an invitation to teach astrophotography as part of the workshop throughout the 80’s.

After dealing with a challenging personal situation, Wayne began contemplating life’s meaning. After experiencing many revealing and illuminating insights, he led contemplative retreats supporting those who wished to consider the deeper aspects of life. More recently, Wayne has been teaching digital astrophotography at the Ranch. He is also currently offering a course titled Contemplate the Cosmos.

Wayne is very enthusiastic about supporting you in contemplating our universe, potentially providing inspiration as well as a possible shift in perspective.

Partial Trail Closure Advisory: Upper Kitchen Mesa will be temporarily closed to all hikers from October 15 through November 1.
