“In each of us dwells a pilgrim. It is the part of us that longs to have direct contact with the sacred.”
~ Phil Cousineau The Art of Pilgrimage: The Seeker’s Guide to Making Travel Sacred

Following the path of pilgrims throughout the centuries, during this Holy Week we will journey inward as well as outward, into the darkness of Maundy Thursday and Good Friday to rise on Easter into the fresh light of morning.

The beauty of the high desert offers a place to experience the movement of the sacred drama of Jesus—with people of our own culture and those from traditional cultures of the Southwest. This can be a time of renewal and transformation for seekers on the way.

Carol and Rev. Wayne MellRev. Wayne Mell served 25 years as a Presbyterian minister on the Navajo reservation, the Mexican border in Arizona and in Taos, New Mexico until his retirement in 2014. Prior to entering ministry, Rev. Mell received a doctorate in history from the University of Oregon. He taught at Wayne State College in Nebraska, then worked for the Oregon Committee for the Humanities in Portland until entering San Francisco Theological Seminary in 1985. He has long been an active student, volunteer advisor, and teacher at Ghost Ranch, the nearby Presbyterian Conference Center. He continues to preach, teach and sing at churches in the area.

Carol Mell is a fine art photographer who received her Bachelor of Fine Art in Dance from The Juilliard School in New York. Originally from Oregon, she followed Wayne’s ministry career around the Southwest working as a teacher, immigrant advocate, Spanish-speaking reporter, humor columnist and tour bus operator and guide. Her photography is exhibited around the country and her columns have been published in three Chicken Soup for the Soul volumes.

Wayne and Carol now live near Albuquerque and enjoy exploring the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the Southwest. They also delight in frequent family gatherings and in evenings spent with Wayne’s guitar and mother lode of folksongs.
