Invitation: Create your own unique mosaic shape! Learn how to form a substrate and mosaic your one-of-a-kind piece with glass, millefiori, beads and more. All supplies are furnished with your registration fee for at least one mosaic with many extra supplies on hand for more. Join me to see what is possible with modern mosaics!

Learning Outcomes: Learn how to cut a lightweight substrate and prepare for mosaic. You’ll work with a variety of materials: mirror, millefiori, stained glass and more. Learn what compositions lend themselves to mosaic, how to nip and cut glass; Learn whether or not your mosaic needs grout and how to finish your piece of art!

Course Schedule: The course includes lots of hand-on instruction and demonstrations with open studio time in the afternoons if you would like to work on your own. Evening sessions will begin with brief visual presentations including the history of mosaic art, samples of modern mosaics in a variety of applications and time to work on your piece. We’ll begin each morning with a brief meditation on creativity and inspiration. We look forward to a closing exhibit with other Festival of Arts courses to wrap up our week.

Instructor Information: A full-time studio artist, Kathy Thaden’s mosaics range from abstract sculpture and landscapes to liturgical wall hangings and commissioned works. Working with glass or stone is transforming. The pieces are broken, change shape, fit together, and then made whole again. “As an artist, my work is informed by my faith, expressing awe at creation and the Creator. As a mosaicist, I treasure glass and stone scraps or discarded items from our throwaway consumer culture. It is important to me that nothing be wasted, finding beauty in what was once broken.” Kathy’s study of fine arts and degree in Commercial Art led her to a 25-year career in television art direction. She won numerous honors for graphic design, animation, and set design, including seven Emmy Awards. Seeking something more tactile, Kathy’s creativity for the past 15 years has flowed through contemporary mosaic art. A Professional Member of the Society of American Mosaic Artists and the Episcopal Church & Visual Arts, Kathy is founder and former President of Colorado Mosaic Artists.
