What better place than Ghost Ranch to hone your plein air chops with the grand vistas and beautiful, endlessly interesting skies?
Prepare to spend a week, learning how to capture the essence of your view through demonstration and one on one guidance. Composition, value and temperature (color) are at the core of all my classes. And painting outdoors gives you the truest sense of those concepts.
We will begin by discussing some helpful tips and tricks of how to set yourself up for your best plein air experience and talk about how to zero in on your subject out in the field. My expertise is in pastel, oil, and watercolor. The concepts for a great painting are the same no matter the medium.
We have the privilege of staying and working at Casa del Sol in the Painted Desert, located in the restricted access side of the ranch and will come to the main campus for meals at the dining hall. As with all my workshops at the ranch, I encourage you to explore tours and activities offered by the ranch. We can work together to decide the best times for this so you can get the most from your workshop experience and the offerings of the ranch. I will be staying at Casa with you so we will be able to begin early in the beautiful Fall light.
As a New Mexico artist, I have spent a month each year over the last 3 years in residency at Ghost Ranch. In addition I also led the Artists in Residence program for the month of August 2021. I have served as faculty for the Plein Air Convention and Expo (PACE) in 2022-23 and will be the featured artist
at the Mendocino Plein Air Open the month before this workshop. So I hope you’ll join me to share a unique and wonderful perspective on this magical place.
You will need to bring your own materials. Please see the welcome letter/Materials List PDF for more details and my contact information. You can also see more of my work and resume at http://www.natashaisenhour.com

What day/time does the workshop start and end?

In-person workshops begin with check-in at 3:00 p.m. and a ranch orientation in the evening on the first date listed for the course and end at 10:00 a.m. with checkout on the last date listed.

Virtual workshops will have a varied schedule that is identified within each workshop description.

What is the difference between a room with private bath, a room with semi-private or shared bath, and a room with communal/dorm bath?

Private bath refers to the type of bathroom, not single occupancy

Private Bath Room: There is a bathroom in that one room that is not shared between or with any other rooms. The highest rate tier of Ghost Ranch lodging.

Semi-private/shared: There is a bathroom between two rooms that is shared by the occupants of the two adjoining sleeping rooms. These rooms will only be used as family or group suites, not to be shared by unknown neighbors as in the past.

Communal/dorm: There is a communal bathroom/shower in the lodging building and participants will need to exit their room to reach these facilities.

I EAT A VEGAN/GLUTEN-FREE/DAIRY-FREE (ETC.) DIET. WHAT ARE MY MEAL OPTIONS?
  • The ranch Dining Hall serves three meals a day on a fixed schedule. We offer a vegetarian option at each meal. While the Dining Hall offers gluten-free items and vegan dishes at some meals, we cannot guarantee that these options will be available for each meal.  Let us know about this need in your registration notes. If it is necessary for a guest to eat a specific diet or if a guest has food allergies, the surest option is to bring personal food items to the ranch. There are refrigerators available for guest use in a few common/public spaces.
