What do you get when you combine a haiku poem and an artful image? Give up? You get a haiga, a traditional Japanese art form. In this workshop, we will take a couple of short hikes into Box Canyon and along Matrimonial Mesa Trail and turn our experiences (what we see, smell, feel, and remember) into printed images and haiku. We will learn two simple forms of relief printmaking; cutting into a block and building up a block , to create simple black and white images. We will also learn how to appreciate and write haiku poetry. Participants will have time to practice both their printmaking and poetry writing skills before choosing a favorite poem and a printing technique to create a haiga (or two). The result will be more than a print and more than a poem. It will be a work of art that uses a few carefully chosen words and a simple visual design to inspire and help us reflect upon ourselves and our environment.
This workshop is open to families and individuals 14 years old and older. All materials will be provided (e.g., knives, foam and rubber plates, glue, ink, paper, brayers), but experienced print makers should bring their own tools.
