On the Trail: Environmental Photography with Katie Orlinsky – G26050112

For over a decade, National Geographic photographer Katie Orlinsky has been photographing stories that explore the relationship between people, animals and the land in the face of environmental change. In this workshop, she will guide participants in the art of outdoor adventure photography and environmental storytelling, with the uniquely beautiful and increasingly fragile environment of northern New Mexico as our classroom.  

Whether you are photographing a mountain range, a detail of a plant leaf, a portrait of a fellow hiker or a horse on the move, you will learn how to create strong images and how to edit them together to tell a powerful story. Participants will push their creative boundaries and hone in on photographic techniques using light, shadow, framing, composition and color. We will discuss tips and tricks on how to improve images depending on the weather and time of day, how to effectively pack our gear, and most of all, how to enjoy the process and connect to the natural world through photography.  

There will be time dedicated to presentations and discussions, and reviews of the work you create. However, the majority of class time will be spent exploring, photographing, and learning while we are on the go. It is a workshop geared toward photographers who are experienced in the outdoors, enjoy hiking, and are looking to take their photography to the next level. Participants should be adept at working with their own digital SLR, digital mirrorless camera, or RAW capable smart phone and have a laptop with a system for downloading, editing and post-processing their work.
