Southwest Native Traditions in Metalsmithing
Led by Steve LaRance
Join award winning artist Steve Wikviya LaRance (Hopi) for a journey into the history and metal-smithing techniques of Southwestern Jewelry. Mr. LaRance will share the techniques of Tufa Casting as well as stamp work as you create pieces of jewelry with timeless appeal. Items can be created with silver and semi-precious stones to add color and beauty. Students are encouraged to use handmade findings to give your creation a unique look. Students are free to bring their own stones and metals to class, or silver will be available for purchase in the class at market prices.
The Tufa Cast technique creates one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces originating from the metalsmiths of the Native Southwest, using the volcanic Tufa stone found in the region. The tufa serves as the mold in which creative designs are carved by hand into the tufa. Molten silver is then poured or cast into the tufa molds to create beautifully textured artistic creations in jewelry.
Please note: students may spend as much as $150 – $350 or more on silver metals used in this class, if supplies are not brought from home, and this cost is NOT included in the class tuition.

Program Tuition: $600 (does not include Room & Board)
