Join Dr. Martha Yates in an exploration of Ghost Ranch and Chaco Canyon and delve into the Chaco Phenomenon. Explore its ancient astronomical observatories, mysteries, and its various wonders in this cultural immersion.

  • Dr. Martha Yates

    Dr. Martha Yates served as District Archaeologist for the Santa Fe National Forest, New Mexico for many years and has taught at UCLA, the University of California Santa Barbara and the University of Vermont.

    She received her BA from Goddard College, her MA degrees from the University of Vermont and Union Theological Seminary/Columbia University, and her PhD from UCLA. She was a Resident Scholar at Harvard University and Harvard Divinity School studying Sanskrit and the New and Old Testaments.

    A professional photographer as well, she has worked for the New York City Planning Commission Press Office and the Mayor’s Press Office. Her photos have appeared in The New York Times and Print Magazine and on WNEW-TV news. She has won special Archaeology awards, a Distinguished Scholars Award from University of California Santa Barbara, UCLA Best Published Article Award, and others.

    Until recently she directed the Museums of Paleontology and Anthropology at Ghost Ranch Education and Retreat Center in Abiquiu, NM. Martha has guided numerous groups to the archaeological sites of the Southwest, which include for Sierra Club, University of Utah, University of New Mexico, Road Scholar, Ghost Ranch, as well as other colleges and universities.

    She is a writer with a number of publications to her credit, and has won awards for her poetry. In 2008 the Secretary of the Interior and the White House appointed Dr. Yates to the Resources Advisory Council, a citizens advisory council to the Bureau of Land Management.
