Protect the Rio Chama

Oct 27, 2026

“If our aquifer were affected in any way, in the tiniest way, we would cease to exist overnight. The way of life that has happened here for thousands of years, would be gone.”
David Evans, CEO of Ghost Ranch

Uranium drilling has been proposed at the headwaters of the river that sustains families, farms and communities across northern New Mexico.

At Ghost Ranch, protecting the land we call home is central to our commitment. We recently announced plans to conserve more than 6,000 acres surrounding Ghost Ranch in partnership with the State of New Mexico. This agreement covers an important stretch of the Rio Chama and will help protect the area’s watershed that so many communities depend on.

We share the deep concerns of Northern New Mexico communities and strongly oppose any activity that would jeopardize the pristine air, land, water and wildlife that make this area so special.

New Mexico has a painful history of uranium mining, with lasting impacts on rural, Hispano, and Tribal communities. We believe the future of this region should be shaped by stewardship, conservation, and respect for the people who call it home. Not by putting its water and natural resources at risk.
