The Ghost Ranch experience is unique to each visitor, and this workshop is a chance for you to respond to your experience through word and image. The landscape will influence our paintings, whether you work abstractly or realistically; whether your focus is large or small. In The Painted Word, work with the Neuland alphabet to supplement our paintings with text. There are no prerequisites for this class; rather we’ll begin with the skills you have, whether in drawing, painting or lettering, and work to develop your own vision. We’ll work with watercolor, gouache and drawing media, and choose texts that complement our ideas. You may want to use your own texts, or you may choose writers who inspire you.
Review the fundamentals of drawing and painting, with the goal of experiencing the surroundings of Ghost Ranch more intensely. You may focus on landscape or on the local flora, or just work abstractly. Start with a number of studies and then work to achieve a series of paintings or an artist’s book. You may not be experienced with all the media we will be using. Learn a bit of paint chemistry along with many techniques for making watercolor work for you. Lettering with various media, such as designers gouache, will allow you to bring harmony to word and image. You may also choose to work with dry media, such as colored pencil, for more delicate work. An option will include making your own paint from the many colors of soil in the Ghost Ranch area.
To integrate text with your images, we’ll work with the Neuland alphabet, learning its fundamental principles, which make it ideal for incorporating with your images. Annie will bring other options for lettering your texts, from using your own handwriting to drawn letter forms. You’ll leave Ghost Ranch with a collection of studies that will enhance your memories of a wonderful week.

Hello and welcome to Ghost Ranch,
I’m joyous and grateful that you have signed up for my workshop at Ghost Ranch in June. It is a splendid time of the year to be there. You will easily see why the painter Georgia O’Keeffe came back for many visits and then decided to stay there to paint.
The class, titled “The Painted Word”, will help you to understand the relationships between writing letterforms and drawing actual things—surprisingly, there are a lot of parallels. Some of you many have drawing and painting experience, others will have just focused on letterforms. Ghost Ranch is a great place to focus on both, as you will be surrounded by an incredible landscape, which will inspire you to express your response to it in both word and image.
We’ll be drawing this landscape, sometimes up close and sometimes panoramic, and then developing these sketches into more detailed paintings. I will be showing the Neuland hand, which is adaptable to bold visual statements as well as delicate ethereal thoughts. If you are new to calligraphy, you’ll find that this hand is adaptable to many applications and it not a bad place to start your lettering passions.
We will do a few writing exercises as well, and you many want to use these in your work. There are also many texts by other writers to work with, so you won’t have to be shy about finding words.
I will be flying to the workshop, but I will come with fully loaded suitcases with art materials. You may not have everything on the supply list, but I am glad to share these things, and I’m sure some of your fellow students will be able to offer up materials as well. I am very interested in pigment chemistry these days, and I will be bringing a few tubes of interesting colors for us all to work with. If you can bring an Altoid® tin or similar small box, I’ll be providing these colors to you for a small lab fee.
If you are curious about my own work, please visit my website, cicaledesign.com to see the many ways I work with words and images, sometimes alone and sometimes together. And if you have any questions about our week that you think I can answer, please contact me, firstname.lastname@example.org.
I am looking forward to seeing you in June. Ghost Ranch is a wonderful place to work on your art skills, but also a great place just to be yourself, thinking about all aspects of your life.
