Create an art quilt by using many pieces of fabric to create an image – a vision – your own concept. Instead of cutting out a particular object, like a bird or a boat, and sewing it on to your cloth as you would with applique, you will actually form the object itself by piecing and sewing together different colors and patterns of cloth. Imagine piecing together a dozen or so pieces to create a leaf, or using bright colors against patterns to create water or grass, layering fabric upon fabric to create depth and dimension. There are no patterns to follow. Just follow your imagination. It’s almost impossible to make a mistake. You do not have to be an expert sewer – you just need to know how to use a sewing machine and scizzors! You don’t even have to draw a straight line. And, remember, this is not your grandmother’s patterned quilt. You will be creating a piece of art work to hang on your wall that comes from your heart. You will learn how to work with color combinations and patterns to create objects in a way that you never imagined. We will begin by creating journal covers to give you time to experiment with this new technique. You will then be working on a larger piece (36×36 or larger) creating a representational piece – a landscape, still life, or people. Your third piece (also large) will be something you create that is abstract in nature. We will work in the mornings after breakfast and depending on the participants, decide if we want to work in the afternoon or after dinner. The schedule is flexible and we’ll be working together every step of the way.
