The Art of Black & White Photography with Thomas Livingstone – G26050103
Black and white photography is a discipline that emphasizes the study of light, tonal range, texture, and form. By removing color, the photographer gains the ability to focus on structure and contrast as the primary tools of visual expression. During this five-day workshop at Ghost Ranch, black-and-white photographer Thomas Livingstone will provide a systematic approach to learning how to see, capture, and refine images in monochrome.
Participants will engage in a combination of field sessions, demonstrations, critiques, and discussions. Field sessions will emphasize recognizing tonal values in natural light, composing with strong geometric structure, and managing exposure for high-contrast conditions. Demonstrations will illustrate both in-camera approaches and post-processing methods for producing effective monochrome images. Group critiques will encourage analytical thinking, providing participants with constructive feedback to refine their creative and technical decision-making.
The workshop is designed for photographers at all levels who wish to deepen their understanding of black and white photography as both a technical process and an artistic practice. By the conclusion of the program, students will have strengthened their compositional skills, improved their ability to evaluate tonal relationships, and gained practical strategies for producing compelling black and white photographs.

Thomas LivingstonThomas Livingstone was born in 1967 in Tarrytown, New York, and moved with his family to Colorado shortly thereafter. Growing up in the mountains sparked a lifelong appreciation for history, light, and landscape. He attended the Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, California, before returning to Colorado to open his photography gallery in 2011. From 2012 to 2019 Thomas devoted seven years to documenting the mining legacy of the San Juan Mountains in black and white. The project culminated in Historic Treasures of the San Juan Mountains, a photo series and published book that preserves the region’s historic mines, weathered structures, and relics of a bygone era. His work blends artistry and preservation, offering a timeless glimpse into Colorado’s mining heritage. His photography has been shown in galleries and art centers throughout the state.
