Rev. Dr. John Nelsen, a 31 year veteran of Border Ministry will bring us an up to the minute update of what is happening at the border and how Tres Rios Presbytery Border Ministry and others in the faith community are responding. Along with current information, John will also focus on the misleading narratives vs. what is actually happening at the border, today’s global reality, ministry opportunities, and a brief review of a border encounter.

Rev. Dr. John Nelsen is a member of the board of directors for Tres Rios Presbytery Border Ministry and retired as pastor at University Presbyterian Church of El Paso (in 2022).

Rev. Dr. John M. Nelsen (John) served the PCUSA for 43 years as a pastor / head of staff of three churches, one in Maryland, one in Oklahoma, and one in El Paso Texas. During John’s service in Oklahoma, the church got involved with Presbyterian Border Ministry and went on their first mission trip in 1993. Since then, John has been involved with Border Ministry in a variety of capacities for over 31 years. One of the primary reasons for John’s call to University Presbyterian Church in El Paso in 2008 was its involvement with Border Ministry. Upon John’s retirement in 2022, he then accepted a call as a full-time volunteer for Tres Rios Presbytery Border Ministry Foundation. Tres Rios Border Ministry has been heavily involved in immigration ministry through direct support and ongoing education to many PCUSA churches, Presbyteries, and organizations. John has been married to Becky for 46 years and have two grown children, and two grandchildren!
