For Senior High School Students

Welcome to SHI Adventure Photography! Whether you have been taking pictures for a long time, or this is your first time picking up a camera, this class is for you. To be a photographer is to be curious about the world, and the environment of Ghost Ranch is such that it is hard to find a bad frame no matter where you look. With this beautiful and extreme landscape as our canvas, we will hike the Ranch and the surrounding area, learning how to work with core elements of photography including light, composition and exposure, to capture unforgettable moments.

What you will need for this course:

  • A digital camera (with SD card)! The Ranch has a handful of cameras that can be used upon request. However, if you have access to your own camera and any lenses, I would recommend that you bring them.
  • Athletic shoes/hiking boots with good grip. We will be hiking a good amount in this class and you will want shoes that can keep up.
  • Small backpack to carry camera, lenses, water, sunscreen, etc.

Laptop (optional). Towards the end of the week, it is my hope to be working with some digital photo editing software. We can share computers, however the more that we have to use, the faster the process will be.

Zachary is a photographer and filmmaker originally from Buffalo, NY. He graduated in 2023 from Loyola University Chicago with a BA in Anthropology and a double minor in Film & Digital Media and Spanish. His work post-graduation has been at a small, non-profit immigrant resource center in Chicago where he has been able to put his digital media storytelling skills to use documenting the great need and resilience within the immigrant community. Some of this work covering immigration was featured in an exhibition at The Chicago Center for Photojournalism. Zachary’s photography interests include (but are not limited to): photojournalism, street, nature, and landscape. A passionate hiker and lover of the outdoors, Zachary worked on Ghost Ranch’s 2023 college staff and is excited to return this summer to introduce others to its beauty through the lens of the camera.
