Nestled in the breathtaking landscapes of northern New Mexico, Camp Wingbeat offers a unique overnight camp experience for teens passionate about birds and the natural world. Held at the iconic Ghost Ranch—a place of immense natural beauty and serenity—this camp is designed to inspire, educate, and foster a deep appreciation for avian life and conservation.

Camp Overview:

Camp Wingbeat is a week-long journey into the heart of birding, tailored for young enthusiasts aged 13 to 17. With the stunning backdrop of Ghost Ranch’s mesas, colorful cliffs, and sprawling skies, campers will immerse themselves in the diverse birdlife of northern New Mexico. The camp combines birdwatching with hands-on learning, artistic expression, journaling, and conservation activities, guided by experienced ornithologists and educators passionate about sharing their love for birds.

What to Expect:

  • Birdwatching Expeditions: Daily guided tours at dawn and dusk—the prime birding times—will take campers across various terrains of Ghost Ranch, from waterways and canyons to desert plains and forests. These excursions are designed to maximize encounters with the region’s birdlife, including resident and migratory species.
  • Educational Workshops: Interactive sessions will cover a range of topics, from bird identification and behavior to photography and the use of birding apps and equipment. Campers will gain practical skills and knowledge that will enrich their birding experiences.
  • Conservation Projects: Participants will engage in meaningful conservation efforts, such as habitat restoration and trail maintenance. These activities aim to instill a sense of stewardship for the environment, human access to it, and an understanding of the ecological importance of birds.
  • Nature Hikes and Exploration: Beyond birding, campers will have the opportunity to explore the geological wonders and archaeological sites of Ghost Ranch, including discussions on extinct life forms of the region, offering a holistic appreciation of the natural environment.
