Mosaics: Meditation & Mentoring – G200724

Come delve deeper into modern mosaics in an open studio and mentoring format. Participants may enjoy the use of a mosaic studio with the opportunity for advanced instruction and teaching. This week is geared toward those who already have basic mosaic and glass cutting skills looking for space to create on their own. Mornings will include reflections on creativity and inspiration prior to the open studio time when you may work independently. Evening sessions may begin with brief visual presentations including the history of mosaic art, samples of modern mosaics in a variety of applications and more time to work on your piece. We look forward to displaying your creations during a closing exhibit with other Festival of Arts courses to wrap up our week. There will also be demonstrations on various applications, techniques, discussions, and critiques when requested. This is an opportunity to receive input on previous work or help navigate new projects. You will be guided to adhesives that work best for different applications, how and when to grout and options for finishing and/or framing your pieces. For the last thirteen years Kathy has studied with international recognized mosaic artists during the Society of American Mosaic Artists annual summit, and more recently invited to teach her workshops as well. Recipient of the prestigious SAMA Scholarship for professional development in 2013, Kathy spent five days at the Chicago Mosaic School learning from an Italian master. A full-time mosaic artist since 2003, Kathy is eager to be your guide during this first mosaic open studio week at Ghost Ranch.

What is double occupancy and single occupancy lodging?
  • All-inclusive rates include double occupancy lodging, meaning that we will have two participants per room in most cases. If you do not specify a roommate, you will be assigned a roommate of the same gender
  • In the off-season (late October-May), participants may choose to upgrade to single occupancy lodging for an additional $50 per night. Guarantee single occupancy lodging by paying the single occupancy upgrade.
  • During our busy summer seasons, late June-July and late September-early October, participants who register alone should expect to have a roommate assigned to their room. In some limited circumstances, a single occupancy upgrade will be available at $100 per night.
What is the difference between a room with private bath, a room with semi-private or shared bath, and a room with communal/dorm bath?
  • Private refers to the type of bathroom, not single occupancy
    • Private: There is a bathroom in that one room that is not shared between or with any other rooms.
    • Semi-private/shared: There is a bathroom in between two rooms that is shared by the occupants of the two rooms.
    • Communal/dorm: There is a communal bathroom/showers in the lodging building (or in a proximate building, for some upper mesa dorm rooms), and participants will need to exit their room to reach these facilities.

    Kathy Thaden

Kathy Thaden links her art to her faith — expressing awe at creation and the Creator — whether abstract pieces, liturgical commissions or mosaic sculpture. The possibilities are infinite — working with thousands of bits of glass and different materials is exciting, and the variations in texture have given Kathy a new approach to mosaic art. Kathy recently came across this quote from Trappist monk Thomas Merton, “Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.”

Kathy’s study of fine arts and degree in Commercial Art led her to a 25-year career in television art direction. Kathy won numerous honors for her graphic design, animation, and set design, including seven Emmy Awards. Seeking something more tactile, Kathy’s creativity now flows through contemporary mosaic art. Working with glass is a transforming process. The pieces are broken, change shape, fit together, then made whole again — sometimes in surprising ways. Kathy’s award winning work has been shown across the US and Canada. Kathy also creates commissioned mosaics including liturgical art. A Professional Member of the Society of American Mosaic Artists and the Episcopal Church & Visual Arts, Kathy is also founder and past-President of Colorado Mosaic Artists.
