Japanese Woodblock Printmaking with Julie Shelton Snyder and Mary Anne Friel – G26070301

Date

Jul 19 – 25 2026

Explore the fascinating possibilities of eco-friendly printmaking through this introduction to mokuhanga (traditional Japanese woodblock printmaking). This workshop will give you all the tools you will need to create beautiful prints at home. Mokuhanga prints can be easily created at home because no mechanical press is required. Prints are hand pressed using a traditional Japanese baren tool.

Workshop participants will learn:
How to optimize your designs for multi-block printmaking
How to safely use Japanese carving tools to carve woodblocks
How to use the uniquely Japanese registration system
How to print your multi-block, multi-color design using water-based ink on Japanese paper
How to incorporate special mokuhanga printing techniques in your final prints

With five hours of daily instruction split between morning and afternoon sessions, you’ll engage in a mix of demonstrations, hands-on exercises, and plenty of open studio time for creating your own edition of mokuhanga prints. The workshop is open to all skill levels.
