In an exciting development, Ghost Ranch Education & Retreat Center, Abiquiu, NM, invited HLF’s Ali and Atman Smith, and Andy Gonzalez as Featured Presenters along with Sister Helen Prejean (of Dead Man Walking fame), Sharon Salzberg, and Adam Taylor of Sojourners: Wisdom Sharing: Refuse to be Polarized, Aug. 31-Sept. 4, 2016. https://www.ghostranch.org/retreat/wisdom-sharing-refuse-to-be-polarized
HLF seeks to bring eight (8) additional HLF staff leaders to better introduce their innovative work to a new region and provide them learning and renewal time. Tax-Deductible Donations will cover their transportation, lodging and meals. The team will attend the retreat and meet with New Mexico school officials on future collaborations similar to their ongoing work with Lincoln Elementary in Madison, WI.
This invitation comes just as HLF takes on a major expansion. Its first class in 2002 trained and mentored 20 students. This year, 2016-17, HLF programs will teach and mentor 4,000/week in 14 schools.
HLF operates in intense urban neighborhoods. It’s been a challenging year. The violent riots after the death of Freddie Gray in Baltimore police custody broke out in view from the playground of HLF’s main school program. Deep tensions remain as the trial continues. The staff has performed admirably under pressure despite the increased police presence, murder rate and community strife.
Ghost Ranch borders the spectacular landscapes of the Chama River Canyon Wilderness that inspired the paintings of Georgia O’Keefe. Staff will enjoy a rare time of personal learning, rest and renewal while sharing ideas with participants/presenters.
