The art of hand building with micaceous clay, mastered by the Pueblo Indians, is a time-honored tradition. In this class, we will explore the use of this clay body to hand build wall masks and adorn them with mixed media that resonates with each individual participant and his/her aesthetic. We will start by hand building a mask; carving, sanding and preparing it for the fire. As the clay dries, you will have an opportunity to participate in a pit firing which will include a pre-made mask that you will then adorn as away of exploring your creative spirit.
Some items that will can be used are feathers, stones, beads, sticks, bark or anything that coincides with your vision. Participants are highly encouraged to bring items from home to use for their finished piece.
Included in the fee of the workshop will be clay and basic supplies to start you on your path to the mask you wish to reveal. At the end of the week, clay permitting, we will be kiln firing the hand built masks that we built first so that you may take them home to create a second mask on your journey. If pieces can’t be fired before your departure, they will be fired and shipped to you via USPS Priority Mail.
