Robinson Davies didn’t start writing fiction until he was 57-years-old. Poet Wallace Stevens sold insurance for a living. Teacher Margaret Edson wrote only one play, the Pulitzer Prize-winning Wit, and she continues to teach. We all support ourselves doing different jobs, but maybe you have a talent for listening to the way people speak like Ms. Edson does. Maybe you have a distinct point of view about the world that you’d like to share. Maybe play writing is your way into the world of literature and the stage. In this class, The Play’s the Thing, we’ll read short plays and talk about character, structure, dialogue, theme and we’ll use these tools to write a short play (to be read at the end of the week, if you choose). Bring your imaginations and your generosity and your courage. Taught by award-winning playwright Prof. Kate Snodgrass, Artistic Director of Boston Playwrights’ Theatre and Elliot Norton Sustained Excellence Award recipient.
