The art of hand building with micaceous clay, mastered by the Pueblo Indians, is a time honored tradition. In this class, we will explore the use of this clay body to hand build masks and adorn them with mixed media that resonates with each individual participant and his/her aesthetic as a way of a transformational experience. We will start by hand building a mask; carving, sanding and preparing it for the fire. As the clay dries, you will have an opportunity to adorn a mask which has been fired before your arrival as a way of exploring your creative spirit and finding the voice within you that needs to be brought forth. Some items that will can be used are feathers, stones, beads, sticks, bark or anything that coincides with your vision. Participants are highly encouraged to bring items from home to start them on their way but we will be enjoying hikes on the property to collect pieces that can be added mindfully to your mask. Included in the fee of the workshop will be clay and basic supplies to start you on your path to the mask you wish to reveal. At the end of the week, clay permitting, we will be firing the hand built masks that we built first so that you may take them home to create a second mask on your journey. If pieces can’t be fired before your departure, they will be fired and shipped to you via USPS Priority.
