A human being is essentially a spiritual eye.Whatever you really see, you are that. –Rumi Drawing is a practice in observation and focus; a way of fine-tuning the eye to see. From the horizon line to a blade of grass, we will explore different approaches to drawing and how the pencil can describe what we observe. This drawing class is primarily studio, and intentionally incorporates the contemplative component as students engage in focused observation to describe what they see in the language of line, shadow, shape, form, texture and value (the degree of light and dark). The first day we will explore the pencil as a tool, and what kinds of lines can be made with it.Each subsequent day will have a different focus, including one morning mid-week where we will sketch in the landscape near Georgia O’Keefee’s house, where she was so inspired by the painted desert. We also willincorporate drawing using several media:collage,India Ink and colored pencils.New material will be presented each morning. Afternoons will be open studio. Evenings will follow-up on that day’s focus. By the end of the workshop, participants will have had a chance to explore drawing in a variety of media, and more importantly, will experience seeing the world around them in a different way. This is a safe and supportive environment for those with no previous art experience. There is no such thing as an awful line!Come with a sense of wonder and play.
