Welcome to Connecting Art and Spirit!

I invite you to join me in an adventure of art and spirit! This class is open to all levels and disciplines: you do not have to be an artist to participate. The only requirement is a willingness to engage in creativity, playfulness and a sense of wonder.

In the week-long class, you will discover the beauty of self-expression through writing, intuitive painting and mixed media: art is alchemy for the soul. The finished project will be a simple sewn book you can take home for further exploration. Together we will discover and trust our inner knowing that leads to the integration of ideas and feelings. The overall focus will be giving voice to your creative spirit through the language of art. We will explore exercises to find creative ways of engaging the imagination using simple materials, such as paint, gesso, collage elements and found objects. We will build rich layers of texture with the use of paint and common mark-making tools.

There will be plenty of demos and guidance to assist you in your artistic endeavors: you cannot make a mistake. Walking along the trails of the beautiful New Mexico landscape will enthuse your inner landscape with creative ideas in journaling and painting. Each class will start with a short, guided meditation and creative writing. At the end of the week, participants will walk away, not with just a beautiful, creative and personal book, but a realization of how art impacts the soul for meaning.

Orientation

After dinner, we will gather in our prayer circle and spend some time getting to know one another. We will discuss and share our intentions for the week, as well as a brief discussion about the week’s format. Please bring your journal to the circle and an object that represents you and has special meaning for our altar.

Monday, May 1

Each morning we will gather in a prayer circle for guided meditation. Our holy circle will be known as a circle of sharing, reflection and prayer. Following the meditation, you will be guided on a journey of discovery through focused writing with a spiritual or poetic reading as an inspirational springboard. Experiential play time will ensue after an introduction of the various art materials, such as acrylics, gesso, gels and collage. Demonstrations and techniques will be the impetus to open our creativity and imagination. In preparation for our book pages, intuitive painting and artful mark-making will be an arena of concentration for the day. At some point, we will walk the inspirational trails of Ghost Ranch to find our own personal mark-making tools for painting.

Tuesday, May 2

Each morning we will gather in a prayer circle for guided meditation. Our holy circle will be known as a circle of sharing, reflection and prayer. Following the meditation, you will be guided on a journey of discovery through focused writing with a spiritual or poetic reading as an inspirational springboard. Preparing the watercolor papers for our book pages will be a part of the day. The mixing of colors with paste will be introduced. Paste papers are the oldest decorated papers used by bookbinders and can be found in books that are centuries old. One of the distinctive qualities of paste paper is a rich 3-dimensional surface. The making of paste papers will be explored in creating designs and shapes with a variety of tools for the background pages.
