Have you sometimes marveled that others can draw people, but assumed it was too hard for you? Then, what could be more fun than finding that it isn’t. Join Helen Byers in this course to demystify the process! Her demonstrations and instruction in classical and expressive techniques will guide you in the basics and fine points of portraiture and figure drawing. Using charcoal (and/or other drawing media of your choice), participants will loosely sketch and carefully render images of each other and invited models. All skill levels are welcome.
The workshop will be housed at historic Casa del Sol, amid the spectacular high-desert landscape made famous by Georgia O’Keeffe, who lived nearby. We’ll luxuriate in the peacefulness of our morning workspace, under the shady portals of the courtyard. Afternoons will offer free time to continue drawing, to rest or hike, take a Ranch tour or horseback ride, go swimming, or explore farther afield. Evenings will bring us together again for camaraderie and star-gazing. Join us!

Helen ByersHelen Byers is an award-winning artist, illustrator, and educator living in New Mexico near Ghost Ranch. Since 2010 her work has focused on botanical and natural science illustration. Since 2005 she has taught annually at the Ranch, where her workshops and retreats have inspired many.
Helen has also taught at the New England Botanic Garden at Tower Hill (MA), Concord Center for the Visual Arts (MA), Tin Mountain Conservation Center (NH), Santa Fe Botanical Garden, the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, and privately. She has exhibited nationally and internationally through juried exhibitions of the American Society of Botanical Artists, and elsewhere. She also participates annually in the Abiquiu Studio Tour.
