For the last decade, National Geographic photographer Katie Orlinsky has been photographing stories that explore the relationship between people, animals and the land in the face of environmental change. In this hands-on workshop, Katie will guide participants in the art of environmental storytelling, with a focus on the unique, beautiful and increasingly fragile environment of northern New Mexico.

This workshop will help participants improve their photographic storytelling skills and create images that help viewers truly connect with the natural world. Whether you are photographing a mountain range landscape, detail of a plant leaf, portrait of a wrangler or a horse on the move, you will learn how to create images that can successfully transform good individual photographs into a powerful story. In the field participants will push their creative boundaries and hone in on photographic techniques using  light, shadow, composition and color. We will discuss tips and tricks on how to improve images depending on the weather and time of day, and most of all, how to enjoy the process and connect to the people and places of an environment through your work.

There will also be time dedicated to presentations and discussions on environmental storytelling through photography and reviews of your daily photographic work (and past work if you so choose) in order to help support your growth as a photographer. Participants should be comfortable with moderate hiking and be adept at working with their own digital SLR, digital mirrorless camera, or RAW capable smart phone. They should also have a laptop with a system for downloading, editing and post-processing their own work

Keynote: At Work by Annie Leibovitz is presented the first day of class, May 3rd.
