Tom Hirt

Tom Hirt has been making hats for thirty-plus years, starting out as apprentice under Art Henderson at the Wether Hat Shop in Colorado Springs. Known as the hatmaker for the movies, he designed and created hats for Tombstone, Conagher, Johnson County War, The Quick and the Dead, and the TV series Heartland. Tom has created hats for President Ronald Reagan and film stars such as Sam Elliott, Buck Taylor, and Val Kilmer. Tom currently teaches hatmaking at Trinidad State College and has taught classes at the Sun Valley Center for the Arts in Sun Valley, ID; the Trappings of the American West in Flagstaff, AZ; and Sul Ross University in Alpine, TX. His hats are on display in the Richard Farnsworth exhibit at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City and in the Gene Autry Museum of the American West in Los Angeles.
