Melanie Pesata is a Jicarilla Apache traditional artist who has a lifetime of experience in Jicarilla basketry, micacious pottery, bead work, and leather work among other traditional skills. Melanie comes from a family full of traditional artists who were all raised traditionally on the Jicarilla Apache Reservation. She has been teaching traditional skills for over 30 years and has been working for the Jicarilla Apache Nation as a traditional bead worker for over 17 years. Aside from her day job making crafts, she also enjoys teaching summer workshops to local youth and community members, creating custom work for clients, and occasionally entering her art into competitive art shows. She has a son, daughter and one grandchild who are all artists as well. When she is not busy creating, she is living a healthy lifestyle, walking her dogs, gathering in-season plants and medicines, and spending time with family.
