Louise Grunewald is a visual artist living and working in Durango, Colorado where she maintains her studio, Western Hands.She graduated from college in 1974 with a BA in Fine Arts/Art Education and her first job was an an art instructor at the high school level. She later moved into the field of graphic design, utilizing her lettering and illustration skills to create logos, brochures, package designs, and other commercial applications. For almost twenty years, from 1985 to 2003, she produced a line of calligraphic greeting cards for Leanin’ Tree Fine Art Greeting Card Company in Boulder, Colorado.
Louise currently employs her teaching skills to offer design, lettering, and printmaking workshops nationally and internationally. Her studio focus for the last twelve years has been on her own art, most often creating a body of work around a particular concept. Her media include lettering, drawing, Solarplate printmaking, watermedia painting, and handmade books. Her studio work is largely inspired by time spent outdoors, traveling to new environments, and taken from her sketchbook impressions of the world around her.
