In Oil: Cliffs & Clouds – G210725

Come paint on location the glorious landscapes of Ghost Ranch. All levels of experience welcome.

Through demonstration and individual instruction you will be guided through a process to help you obtain confidence and pleasure from painting outdoors and in the studio. Paint the dramatic clouds, skies, sunsets and landscape of Ghost Ranch. Learn how to capture the changing light through value, color and composition.

Classes are structured with enough direction to ensure success and enough freedom to allow for creative expression. You will need to bring your own materials, a supply list is available on my website: www.julianacrownover.com. If you are comfortable in another medium, you are welcome to participate in this class using a different medium. I regularly work in oils, pastels, and acrylics.

My demos will be in oil, but the instruction will be applicable to a wide range of mediums. You can see more of my art at www.paintandsimple.com. We will have several field trips to paint on location. You may be asking, “there is a material fee and we have to bring our supplies!!!???  The $15 fee will buy each of you my all time favorite paint brush, a Rosemary Number 8 flat that I use for 95% of all my paintings. It will last you hundreds of paintings, and comes from England so it is a bit hard to find. If any of you don’t want it, I will buy it back from you.

What day/time does the workshop start and end?

In-person workshops begin with check-in at 3:00 p.m. and a ranch orientation in the evening on the first date listed for the course and end at 10:00 a.m. with checkout on the last date listed.

Virtual workshops will have a varied schedule that is identified within each workshop description.

During Covid safety period - single occupancy lodging is the standard
  • During Covid-19 periods, all lodging types will be single occupancy at no additional charge. Of course, you can share a room with a spouse, partner, family or another person that shares your full-time residence. The extra folks that share a room will pay for workshop registration fees and meals.
What is the difference between a room with private bath, a room with semi-private or shared bath, and a room with communal/dorm bath?

Private bath refers to the type of bathroom, not single occupancy

Private Bath Room: There is a bathroom in that one room that is not shared between or with any other rooms. The highest rate tier of Ghost Ranch lodging.

Semi-private/shared: There is a bathroom between two rooms that is shared by the occupants of the two adjoining sleeping rooms. These rooms will only be used as family or group suites, not to be shared by unknown neighbors as in the past.

Communal/dorm: There is a communal bathroom/shower in the lodging building and participants will need to exit their room to reach these facilities.

    Juliana Crownover

Juliana Crownover is an award-winning pastelist who has been painting in pastels for over 20 years and teaching for 10 years. She has a BA from Austin College in biology, art, and environmental studies. A member of the Southwest Pastel Society, she describes her passion this way: “In my own art, I use light and color to bring out beauty in everyday life, whether that is a trail I have hiked 100 times, or my son hanging laundry on a line. In that way I use my art as a reminder of where to find beauty all around us, and to slow down in our daily lives so that we may see it. In my classes I strive to create a balance that allows enough freedom so that students can create their own art, and enough direction to ensure success. Aside from the end-goal of finished art, I think the process should be enjoyed, and I work hard to create an environment that allows for that.”
