Ghost Ranch in Abiquiu is home to the Florence Hawley Ellis Museum of Anthropology and the Ruth Hall Museum of Paleontology. The museums are located just west of Lower Pavilion. Summer hours: Open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday, 1-5 p.m. Winter hours (Labor Day to Memorial Day)-Closed the month of December: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday; closed on Sundays and Mondays.



The Ruth Hall Museum of Paleontology

Ghost Ranch in Abiquiu is known worldwide among paleontologists as the location of the articulated fossils of the Coelophysis, as well as having one of the richest quarries of the Triassic era, which began 220 million years ago. The museum is named for amateur paleontologist Ruth Hall, wife of first resident Ghost Ranch Director Jim Hall. Displays range from a complete Coelophysis cast skeleton to remains from great alligator-like reptiles. The Coelophysis also has the distinction of being named the State Fossil of New Mexico.

Florence Hawley Ellis Museum of Anthropology

Ghost Ranch in Abiquiu is home to the Florence Hawley Ellis Museum of Anthropology. Extensive displays are designed to tell the amazing story of twelve thousand years of successive habitation of the Gallina-Chama-Rio Grande drainage by peoples of different ethnic makeup and cultures. The museum also displays contemporary work by Indian, Spanish and Anglo artists and artisans who carry on the traditions of the peoples that have inhabited this area.

The Anthropology Museum is pleased to present the following courses for 2008:

A special registration fee of $400 is available for persons registering for both weeks of the Archaeology seminar.

Piedra Lumbre Education & Visitor Center

This newly re-opened Center (formerly known as the Ghost Ranch Living Museum) hosts permanent galleries and exhibits as well as traveling exhibits from the New Mexico Museum of Natural History.

The Center -- a partnership between Ghost Ranch and  the U.S. Forest Service -- is located on U.S. Highway 84 between mile markers 225 and 226, just north of the main Ghost Ranch entrance. Picnic tables are available, and there is a gift shop, as well as a small snack area.

 

Ghost Ranch Piedra Lumbre Education and Visitor Center houses exhibits on the geology, paleontology and archaeology of the region, as well as exhibits on northern New Mexico culture, history and tradition. It is dedicated to showcasing the strides that northern New Mexico communities are making to promote sustainable land and water practices and to improving our land-based economy.

Visiting Hours: April 1 through Labor Day: Tuesday through Saturday, 9 am to 5 pm, Sunday, 1-5 pm, closed Mondays. Labor Day to October 31: Tuesday-Saturday, 9 am to 5 pm, closed Sundays and Mondays. The Center will close October 31 and reopen on April 1.
