Casa del Sol Retreat Listings

History of Casa del Sol

On May 3, 2006 Ghost Ranch realized a dream — the dream to open Casa del Sol as a Spirituality and Retreat Center — a contemplative retreat space in the high desert. With its opening, Ghost Ranch has taken another major step in meeting its priority: “to provide resources for spiritual life, awakening to the call of God’s Spirit leading people to action, particularily in the areas of peace and justice”.

In July of 2005, Philip and Alison Newell joined the process of creating this contemplative retreat space, leading worship every day at the Ranch, and holding Thursday evening conversations around the fire at Casa del Sol. They were helping us all to listen to our own spiritual yearnings, and to envision how this retreat center could reach those desires. They continue to join us annually during the month of July. For a listing of courses led by the Newells and other Casa del Sol offerings, please visit our catalog.

Hiking Trails at Ghost Ranch Abiquiu

*NOTE: SOME HIKING TRAILS MAY BE CLOSED AT CERTAIN TIMES DUE TO EXTREME FIRE DANGER.

top_people_sml When hiking it should be remembered that the formations are composed primarily of soft and disintegrating sandstone or gypsum. Do not attempt to climb any rock formation or stray from clearly marked trails. Snakes are comparatively rare and most are harmless, but caution should always be exercised. Wear sun protection and carry plenty of water.

Click on the trail map below and view a larger, printable version.

Maps and guides are not necessary to enjoy any of the trails.
However, information about the terrain and length of hikes is available at the Reception Desk in the main office at the Abiquiu Campus. The most popular hikes are to Chimney Rock, Box Canyon, Kitchen Mesa, and the Piedra Lumbre hike to the reopened Ghost Ranch Piedra Lumbre Education and Visitor Center.

Abiquiu Library
As an educational institution, Ghost Ranch in Abiquiu has always had a Library, ever since the Ranch became the property of the Presbyterian Church in 1955.

Today, the Library, which is open 24 hours a day, is a quiet, comfortable center for reading and study, located in a fine old adobe building just across from the Dining Hall. The Library now has over 16,000 volumes, organized by the Library of Congress cataloging system. Collections focus on program areas of the Ranch, but there is also a large leisure reading collection of American, English and Spanish literature.
