One Family (Family Week 1) $500.00

Family Week at Ghost Ranch

One Family

Rivers walkin’, people talkin’, children play throughout the day.

All around us mountains sound us,

We – together – One Family.

Families come in many different shapes and sizes and all are celebrated under the clear blue skies of Ghost Ranch.  Ghost Ranch is a family – a family of friends, a family of artists, a family of faith.  What better place to spend time with those you love and explore new things together! Family Week will have music, arts, crafts, good discussions, play time, camp fires, movies (with popcorn), swimming, hiking, laughing, playing, and praying together.

Morning Classes

Morning classes will meet for five days from 9 a.m. until noon. As you are registering for Family Week please be sure to sign up for a morning class (listed below).  We invite adults to choose one of the morning classes.  Teens are welcome to register for one of the morning classes, or they may opt to participate in the Youth Activities Program. Children 12 years old and younger must either enroll in one of the morning classes with an adult, or enroll in the Youth Activities Program for each morning.

Afternoon Classes

The afternoons will offer short versions of the morning classes, as well as some other activities, for all of us to sample. When you arrive at Ghost Ranch, the on-campus check-in process (packet pick-up, orienting to housing, etc.) will include an opportunity for you and your family to sign up for 2 afternoon courses (each of which will last 2 days). We ask that you come prepared to register for a variety of afternoon classes as they will be filled on a first-come-first-serve basis when folks arrive at the Ranch. We ask that you sign up for courses that are not a repeat of the morning course for which you are already registered. Registration for Family Week afternoon classes will be Monday, 2:00pm – 5:30pm on the front porch of the Main Office with Jodi Wert. If you miss this registration window, there will be another chance to sign up for afternoon classes immediately following the Monday evening all-campus orientation.

Evening Activities

Evenings will be special times for the whole family:  story telling, campfires with ghost tales and singing, a concert, a movie night, celebrations, and many more.

Your Hosts for the Week:  Jodi, Brandon, Jakelynn, and Lucia Wert from Tucson, Arizona.  The Werts invite your family to join theirs for this special week. The Wert family lives in Tucson, where Brandon, an ordained Presbyterian minister, has served at Southside Presbyterian Church. He is also the Coordinator for the Borderlinks Young Adult Volunteer Program for the Presbyterian Church (USA). Jodi has a degree in Hispanic Literature and is an educator. She is currently home schooling their daughters, Jakelynn and Lucia. Jakelynn is eight, enjoys reading, camping and rock climbing, while Lucia, who is six, loves animals and enjoys singing.

Landscape Lunacy!         G10F715
Children 12 years and younger must enroll with an adult.
Capture the essence of Ghost Ranch using the earth pigments and minerals of the natural environment. We'll collect the varicolored soils of the Ranch -- deep reds, glowing yellows, crystalline whites -- and, with a little "magic", convert them into pigments for painting the landscapes of the area on the traditional wooden "canvas" of the 'retablo', a venerable Spanish Colonial art tradition of northern New Mexico. You'll literally get to take home a "piece of Ghost Ranch"! No experience necessary!
Juanito Jimenez, Santa Fe, NM

Micaceous Pottery     G10F716
Children 12 years and younger must enroll with an adult.
We'll explore traditional Native American micaceous pottery using pinch pot, slab, and coil techniques (no pottery wheels). Create your own small pots or animalitos (little animals). We will use native clays and have a traditional outdoor firing. All levels welcome!

Outdoor Adventures     G10F717
Children 8 + years old are welcome in the class; but, due to safety precautions (i.e. harness fit), child may not be able to participate in the high ropes challenge course. Children 8 - 12 years old must enroll with an adult.
Come participate in hiking, orienteering, canoeing or kayaking, and Low and High Ropes challenge courses. While all activities will be moderately physically demanding, no experience is necessary. Just bring your sense of ADVENTURE!

The following course will be offered in afternoon sessions only:

Children 12 years and younger must enroll with an adult; registration for the following activity can only be done upon arrival at the Ranch on Monday afternoon from 2:00 pm – 5:30 pm.

Adobes A Go Go!
Adobe is the world’s most common form of building material, because all it takes is dirt and a little water! The advantages of adobe construction are well-documented, and we’ll learn a little bit about that as we mix and make miniature adobe bricks. We’ll then learn how to build garden walls, domes, and hornos (ovens) with our miniature bricks – a take-home project!
Wayne Williams, Ghost Ranch, NM
